Bird Walks in Chandigarh
About The Event
Discover the birdlife and green surroundings of Medicity, New Chandigarh, SAS Nagar with a guided morning bird walk organised by ATAAVI Bird Foundation. Scheduled for Sunday, 27 September 2026, from 5:45 AM to 7:45 AM, this two-hour nature experience offers participants an opportunity to explore the open and green spaces around Medicity while observing birds in their natural surroundings. Medicity is situated within the rapidly developing landscape of New Chandigarh, where planned urban infrastructure meets the greener surroundings of the Shivalik foothills. The area includes open spaces, landscaped stretches, scattered trees, scrub and patches of natural vegetation. These different habitats create opportunities to observe both familiar urban birds and species associated with semi-natural environments. The guided walk will be led by Gagandeep Singh, whose birding and nature documentation work began in 2019 and covers Chandigarh, Panchkula, Mohali, Solan, Sirmaur, Morni Hills, Dehradun and surrounding regions. Participants may encounter a variety of bird species associated with the Medicity landscape. ATAAVI lists species including Red Junglefowl, Indian Peafowl, Black-rumped Flameback, Spotted Owlet, Shikra, Black Kite, Black-winged Kite, Ashy Prinia, Plain Prinia, Baya Weaver, Yellow-eyed Babbler, Crested Bunting, Long-tailed Shrike, Wire-tailed Swallow, Spotted Dove, Laughing Dove and Asian Koel, among others. Bird sightings are naturally dependent on season, weather and conditions during the walk. The walk also offers an opportunity to appreciate the importance of retaining trees, vegetation and open green spaces as New Chandigarh continues to develop. ATAAVI highlights the role of these remaining natural areas in supporting ecological connectivity and local biodiversity. The participation fee is ₹300 per person. ATAAVI states that the fee collected goes entirely to the bird guide and that the organisation does not retain or profit from the amount. Registration is available through the organiser's registration link.
